Art in the Park to showcase offerings by local artisans

A variety of colorful artwork will be displayed during the annual Art in the Park event on Saturday, Aug. 4.
For the seventh year, the Point Loma Artists will set up the outdoor art show at Plumosa Park in Point Loma, 2680 Chatsworth Blvd. The show will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and organizers say the community is welcome to take in the art and talk to the artists themselves.
“People can learn about the styles and techniques,” said Beverly Brady, president of the Point Loma Artists.
All the exhibited works will be available for sale, she said.
The Point Loma Artists is a group of about 30 members with different levels of experience.
“We have professionals but also people who just enjoy painting,” Brady said. “We aren’t self-indulgent. A lot of our artists donate paintings for charity causes.”
The Art in the Park exhibition will feature 12 members of the Point Loma Artists who present a diverse collection of watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings in a wide variety of styles.
“Enjoy the outdoors while visiting the show,” Brady said.
Four members of the Point Loma Artists were also involved in the enhancement of three utility boxes in Point Loma, including Brady’s “Girls Feeding the Birds,” at the corner of Rosecrans and Evergreen streets; “Point Loma Lighthouse,” by Julie Anderson on Emerson Street north of Rosecrans; and “Scarecrow Box” by Bette Decker and Sue Crowder on Soto Street, adjacent to Collier Park.
“It was a fun thing to do,” said Brady. “And a good chance to put the art out there.”
Saturday’s event will feature everything from whimsical papier mache and ceramic sculptures to pottery, handmade jewelry and fine art cards and prints.
The Point Loma Artists was formed nine years ago by ten local artists to create a small network of like-minded artists who could share their creative processes and to provide exhibitions for the community.
The group’s work has been showcased in neighborhood restaurants, banks, private organizations, government offices, libraries and fairs.
