ON THE AVENUE
City officials including District 1 Councilman/Council President Scott Peters (second from right) and District 5 Councilman Brian Maienschein (right) are joined by community and business leaders June 25 to break ground for the Genesee Avenue Widening Project.
At a cost of $4.1 million, the project will increase traffic lanes from four to six on Genesee between I-5 and Campus Point Drive, with additional turn lanes.
Work will take place from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. and 8 p.m.-5 a.m., Monday through Friday, until completion in August 2008.

UC July 4 Celebration ready to blast off
The UC Celebration will once again commemorate Fourth of July with a day full of fun at Standley Park, 3585 Governor Drive.
Residents are invited to make a day of it, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast that runs until 10:30 a.m.
Kids will spin their red, white and blue wheels in a bike parade at 11 a.m., followed by free swimming at Swanson Pool from noon to 4 p.m.
Games and activities will be set up in other areas of the park, such as a dunk tank, pony rides, 32-foot rock wall, Astro Jump, monkey bridge and book barn.
A beer garden will be open for those ages 21 and up.
The afternoon is capped by a concert by Joey & the Stingrays, which will wrap up by 7 p.m., in plenty of time for those who plan to travel to a prime spot for fireworks.
A free trolley will pick up and drop off riders along Governor Drive, with stops at Gullstrand and Stressemann streets.
For vendor booth information, call (858) 453-1033.
