Stingaree, a popular restaurant and nightclub, has been recognized in Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s annual “Hot List” as one of the 25 hottest new nightclubs in the country.
“We had no idea we were even being considered for such recognition,” said James Brennan, principal partner at Endev Enterprises, a San Diego-based real estate and entertainment development company that owns the facility. “I found out when a friend of mine from New York called and told me.”
Conde Nast’s annual “Best of” lists are well known to the public and highly coveted by restaurants, hotels, spas, resorts and other establishments connected to the travel and entertainment industries.
The final selections are based on anonymous visits to the facilities by magazine representatives. They are evaluated on areas like design, service and amenities.
“Because of the evaluation process and it being done anonymously, there is no way to prepare for it,” Brennan stated. “Nor can you PR your way onto the list by buying lots of advertising in the magazine. However, to be included on the list with so many other great places across the United States is something we are extremely proud of at Stingaree.”
Open for just 18 months (since December 2005), Stingaree has established itself as one of the major players “” if not the best one “” in high-end Downtown San Diego entertainment options.
“We offer three levels with three different atmospheres for our customers,” Brennan said while explaining the physical layout of the 22,500-square-foot facility. “The Rooftop Oasis is a more intimate, carry-on-a-conversation type of place. The second-floor mezzanine has a private penthouse with its own bartender. The first floor is both the nightclub with music and the restaurant.”
According to Brennan, the design idea originated first from his belief that San Diego had become a party destination spot and second from his intent to take a little of what other parts of the country offer.
“I am from New York, so there is a little New York influence,” he said. “There is also some of Las Vegas and South Beach Miami. A writer from the New York Post newspaper called us a perfect marriage between a club and kitchen, which is a great compliment.”
With all the glitz and glamour, what type of clientele does Stingaree attract?
“Most of our customers are people in their late 20s and 30s,” Brennan explained. “The demographics have changed over the years.
“Going to clubs is not just for 21-year-olds, and besides, not all 21-year-old people can afford some places.”
Also, perhaps acknowledging the more laid-back atmosphere of Southern California and variances within the clothing industry, Brennan notes some flexibility in the dress code.
“There are $300 pairs of jeans and $200 T-shirts. Our doormen are trained to recognize what is acceptable clothing. So just because you have on jeans and a T-shirt does not mean you will not be allowed in,” he said.
As for the future and whether Stingaree can sustain its popularity or if it will become just a five-year wonder before closing, Brennan offered some valuable business acumen.
“We certainly did not build Stingaree at the level it is only to have to redo it in a few years,” he explained.
“It was created and built with forward thought, and there is plenty of life left before we need to address anything.
“However, you have to stay ahead of the trends and reinvent yourself as it applies to those trends. If it’s not music, then it is art, and if it is not art, then it is food. Stingaree is an experience, not just a nightclub spot.”
