Stewart moves across the Street
MaryAnn F. Stewart has joined the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, 10355 Science Center Drive, as vice president for external relations/chief development officer.
She was previously executive director of external relations for the neighboring Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD.

AWIS hosts ‘Women in Bioscience’ conference
The San Diego chapter of the Association for Women in Science is hosting its biennial “Women in Bioscience” conference on May 19 at the Salk Institute, 10010 N. Torrey Pines Road.
As this year’s theme of “Discovering New Heights” suggests, the conference invites scientists at all career levels to network and learn about various career opportunities in the sciences. AWIS-San Diego will also be awarding scholarships to outstanding students at the event.
Keynote speaker is Julia Brown, a member of the Tech Coast Angels organization that offers financial assistance to biotechnology entrepreneurs.
She will discuss her experience in the healthcare and biotechnology industries.
Among other workshops is “The Cures in Your Backyard,” a seminar on recent drug discoveries in marine microorganisms led by William Fenical of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Meanwhile, Marie Betts-Johnson, founder and president of the International Protocol Institute of California, will offer advice on international business and job etiquette.
AWIS is a national nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the equal treatment and participation of women in the fields of science, mathematics, technology and engineering.
The AWIS-San Diego chapter is the largest chapter in the country, with more than 250 diverse members, ranging from professors to patent attorneys.

Bank names La Jollan chairman of the board
After acquiring Landmark National Bank, with offices in La Jolla and Solana Beach, 1st Pacific Bancorp also recently named La Jolla resident Christopher Scripps McKellar to its board of directors.
McKellar, who founded and served as chairman of the board for Legacy Bank, is presently the president of Capella, a real estate development company based in San Diego.
His community involvement includes serving as a trustee of The Bishop’s School, and on the board of the Neurosciences Institute.
Rancho Santa Fe resident and longtime La Jolla banker Ronald J. Carlson will be added to both the corporate and bank boards once the acquisition is finalized, during the second or early third quarter of the year.
1st Pacific Bancorp serves as the holding company for 1st Pacific Bank of California, which features branches in UTC/La Jolla, Oceanside, Mission Valley and El Cajon.
