Bishop's Lady Knights surface with polo's Tyr Cup

The Bishop’s School girls water polo keeps surfacing with wins in recent action.
Bishop’s came into action over the last week with a record of 13-0 for head coach Doug Peabody.
The Lady Knights routed Patrick Henry 20-3 as they got five goals from Sarah Van Norman and four from Chelsea Smith-Carmichael. Sophomore Lexie Bohlmeir chipped in with three goals.
In a 16-8 victory over neighborhood rival La Jolla, Van Norman led the way with six goals, while Dominique Sardo added four goals and five assists. Christina Michel made nine saves in goal.
Bishop’s saw action in the Tyr Cup and went 4-0 en route to winning the crown. Van Norman was named MVP and Smith-Carmichael and Michel were First-Team All-Tournament. Zinnea Alexander, Sardo and Cathy White were named Honorable Mention.
For the tournament, Van Norman tallied 15 goals, while Smith-Carmichael and Sardo had nine apiece. For the week, Michel had 37 saves.
The only thorn among all the roses was a loss to the rival Lady Islanders of Coronado during the America’s Finest City Tournament. Host Coronado beat Bishop’s 11-5 in the championship game.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Lady Torreys came into this week with a mark of 5-8 for head coach Nate Heppner.
“The girls continue to compete well despite losing leading scorer Amanda Solomon for the season due to an eye injury sustained in a game two weeks ago versus Mar Vista,” Heppner noted.
Junior Becca Poliner has become an increased scoring threat, tallying five goals in a 21-8 win versus Morse and three goals in a 7-4 loss to Clairemont in recent play.
Junior Melanie Kaplan and sophomore Claire Altree have stepped up their scoring as well, while sophomore 2M defense Olivia Lenz and goalie Hallie Stevens continue to anchor the LJCD defense.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings under head coach Dante Laghetto come into play this week at 12-6, 5-2 in Western League play.
La Jolla finished fifth last weekend at America’s Finest City Tournament with an 8-4 win over Vista. Mollie Chadwick and Kristen Ostosh represented La Jolla on the all-tourney team.
Laghetto also noted the recent play of Alex Vespremi, Keller Felt and Michelle Hook.
“We’re playing our best ball of the season,” Laghetto said. “The girls have worked hard and have done better than my expectations.”
