LJCD, Bishop's cagers take on the Elite

Local scholastic girls basketball teams settle back into league play now, but not before seeing tourney action in recent weeks.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School last weekend, the Lady Torreys competed among a number of teams in the Elite Classic. In its contest, LJCD dropped a 62-51 decision to Lynwood.
Lynwood outscored the Lady Torreys 21-11 in the third quarter to break a 28-28 tie at the half. LJCD (12-5) committed 21 turnovers but frustrated Lynwood with its own full-court pressure.
In the loss for the Lady Torreys, junior Dominique Conners was good for 16 points, while Chelsea Burns, also a junior, added 13.
The Lady Torreys recently traveled to the San Francisco Bay area for games against two of the state’s top-ranked teams: Sacred Heart Cathedral and Pinewood.
LJCD started strong against third-ranked Sacred Heart (9-2), jumping out to a 31-21 halftime lead. With tough defense and four players scoring in double figures, the Lady Torreys finished the game with a 58-52 victory.
Scoring in double figures were Janae Fulcher (17 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks), Jamesha Townsend (11 points and eight rebounds), Conners (13 points) and Burns (11 points).
In the next contest against Pinewood, LJCD lost Fulcher to an injury on the game’s opening sequence. The Lady Torreys battled to make up for the 17 points and 10 rebounds that Fulcher has been averaging this season. Conners led the team in scoring with nine points.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings came into play this week at 8-4 for head coach Ty Eveleth.
Olivia Waldon is averaging 12.0 points per game, Alyssa Wilson is averaging 11.9 and Stephanie Guillou is averaging 6.1 points per game. Rachel Pedowitz is averaging 4.1 blocks per game on defense.
“We have played very well in our non-league contests, and have improved a lot as a team since the start of the season,” Eveleth remarked. “If we continue to play like we have to this point, we should have a good chance to defend our league title.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights come into action this week at 14-4 for head coach Marlon Wells.
According to Wells, Kathleen Roerhkasse has really stepped her game up lately, as has freshman Elaina White.
Bishop’s was at 11-0 before Michelle Brunker went down with a knee injury. The Lady Knights have been 3-4 since that time.
Bishop’s also saw action in the Elite Classic last weekend, dropping a 52-48 decision to Rosary.
The Royals led 13-4 after the first quarter and 27-12 at the half. For Bishop’s, Roehrkasse poured in 27 points in the loss, tallying 14 in the final quarter alone.
