Kearney digs in at Bentley; Sardo, Trojans roll

A number of local graduates are contributing on the collegiate sports scene this fall at their respective schools.
Alex Kearney (La Jolla High) and the Bentley College (Mass.) women’s volleyball team continue to roll along.
Kearney had 14 kills, including 13 in the first two games, as Bentley remained undefeated in Northeast-10 Conference play early last week, sweeping defending NE-10 playoff champion Bryant University in three games.
Kearney and the Lady Falcons extended their regular season conference (NE-10) winning streak to 28 last Friday in a five-game victory over Le Moyne College.
In other women’s volleyball action, Harvard freshman setter Lily Durwood (La Jolla High) handed out 53 assists (5.64 per game) on a weekend earlier this month and added a season-high nine digs against Penn.
In doing so, she was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Against the Quakers, Durwood handed out 26 assists, recorded nine digs and served three aces. She added five more digs and 17 assists in a loss to Princeton that weekend.
On the women’s soccer scene, University of California, San Diego (UCSD) held on for a narrow 1-0 victory on the road at San Francisco State last Friday.
With the win, the Lady Tritons improve to 15-1-2 overall and 12-1-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Among the UCSD players with goals this season are Lauren Segars (University City High) with three and Laura Borenstein (La Jolla High) with a pair.
In men’s water polo, top-ranked USC rolled up a 20-8 win over visiting St. Francis last Sunday behind goals from 12 different Trojans.
The 20-goal performance also marked USC’s 20th straight home victory, and brings the Trojans’ overall winning streak to 36 games. Now 17-0 on the year, the Trojans got a pair of goals from Nico Sardo (The Bishop’s School).
Andrew Kushnir (The Bishop’s School) is a member of the Whittier College men’s water polo team. Whittier recorded its sixth victory of the season last weekend with a 15-7 win over Occidental.
