The Ocean Beach Historical Society wants your take on the Peninsula at the 11th annual OB Exposed! photography contest and exhibit. The exhibit will display photography taken in the Ocean Beach and Point Loma areas by San Diegans, young and old.
“It’s a pretty cool event because it brings people out that are interested in the history of Ocean Beach and a lot of people reunite,” said Pat James, president of the Ocean Beach Historical Society.
The show will display a wide variety of photography taken by anyone from the San Diego area, regardless of age or style. The only requirement is that the submitted photos have been taken in Point Loma or Ocean Beach.
The Ocean Beach Historical Society began the OB Exposed! exhibit in 1995 in an effort to build the peninsula’s photographic history. Each year the contest has been held, participants have been extended the invitation to add their work to the Historical Society’s photographic archive that chronicles the area’s visual history.
The archive is currently housed in the Point Loma Methodist Church, where the society holds its meetings. Though the archive is only available by appointment, San Diegans will be able to see their winning work displayed in the Ocean Beach Library after the contest.
The Ocean Beach Historical society will also be awarding prizes for the best photography. Contestant categories include: best in show, best black and white, best color, best vintage, best child’s under age 16, best special effects and people’s choice.
The vintage category has been particularly popular for the Historical Society because it allows Peninsula residents to trot out old photos from the younger days of the area.
Members of the historical society will be judging the work and NBC reporter Ken Kramer will be on hand to help present awards.
The contest is open to all ages and only costs $1 per entry. The show is being held at the Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., on Thursday, May 18, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Contributors should deliver entries to James Gang Graphics, Inc.,1931 Bacon St., in Ocean Beach between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. For more information, call Pat James at (619) 225-1753.
