The Point Loma Garden Club will host its third biennial spring tour of notable peninsula gardens on Saturday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Gardens on the Point” will feature eight homes, as well as a plant sale, an information booth staffed by certified Master Gardeners, and vendors with garden-related products.
More than 500 people are expected to attend the tour, which is the club’s largest fundraising event. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used for beautification projects throughout the peninsula, as well as for scholarships benefiting horticulture students.
The self-driven tour begins at either 3220 Kellogg St. or 1402 Willow St., where maps and descriptions of the other homes will be distributed to ticket-holders. The club recommends that friends carpool to the event, as all the homes are not within easy walking distance.
The gardens range in types of foliage, style and size, the largest being one-half acre. Some of the gardens accompany historic homes, while others have been featured in garden publications.
Two of the eight are owned by garden club members.
“We select the gardens for their unique horticulture,” said Jacqueline Tomlinson, event co-chair and four-year member.
The Point Loma Garden Club is more than 30 years old and open to gardeners of all ages and levels of expertise. Its membership of 98 people includes homeowners with large properties and apartment dwellers with container or window gardens. The club meets monthly from September to June and offers guest speaker programs about horticulture and flower arranging.
“It’s open to everybody,” Tomlinson said. “The idea is to come and have fellowship, friendship and enjoy learning more of gardening and flower arranging.”
Tickets to the garden tour can be purchased in advance for $15 at Walter Andersen Nursery in Point Loma or Poway, Mission Hills Nursery and Cedros Gardens in Solana Beach. Admission is $20 the day of the event.
