BRIEFS: Humane Society opens wildlife center, lifeguard positions open and San Diego named No. 5 city for food lovers

SAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY OPENS NEW WILDLIFE CENTER FOR INJURED AND ABANDONED ANIMALS

The new Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center is specially designed for injured and abandoned wild animals that come to Project Wildlife, a program of the San Diego Humane Society. The state-of-the-art Wildlife Center includes habitats that will help to reduce stress as patients heal and grow before they are released back to the wild. The facility’s medical and surgical suites will expand San Diego Humane Society’s capabilities and provide a permanent, dedicated home for veterinary care for wildlife.

Project Wildlife stands alone as the primary resource in San Diego County for the majority of wildlife to receive help when they critically need it. Every year, Project Wildlife provides more than 12,000 wild animals — from raptors to squirrels and ducks — the best opportunity to receive the nurturing care they need to survive, whether it’s specialized veterinary care, injury rehabilitation or simply a safe place to mature.

The Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center is located at 5433 Gaines St. For more information about what to do if you find a baby or injured wild animal, visit sdhumane.org or call the Project Wildlife hotline at 619-225-WILD.

CITY OF SAN DIEGO LOOKING TO HIRE 46 OPEN POSITIONS FOR POOL LIFEGUARDS AND MANAGERS

Looking for an entry level summer job with flexible hours and the chance to work outdoors? The City is currently looking to fill 46 open pool lifeguard and pool manager positions at 13 facilities.

Interested participants must attend an initial tryout to assess basic swimming proficiency and qualify to enroll in the City’s lifeguard training course. Tryouts will be held Tuesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 21 at the Tierrasanta Pool from 5-7 p.m., and Tuesday, March 26, at Vista Terrace Pool in San Ysidro from 9-10 a.m.

Swimmers who pass the tryout must attend a week-long mandatory lifeguard training course that teaches safety, first aid and lifesaving procedures. Participants who graduate the course will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22 First Aid certifications and qualify to work as a lifeguard at City pools. The cost of the lifeguard training course is $231, and financing and scholarship options are available.

Those who wish to participate in pool lifeguard tryouts must create an account at www.sdrecconnect.com prior to attending. Positions are open to all age groups, but minors will need to provide a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian to participate. For more information regarding swimming proficiency requirements, as well as dates and times for the lifeguard training course, please visit https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/centers/aquaticsand click the “Become a Pool Lifeguard” tab.

YELP NAMES SAN DIEGO NO. 5 CITY FOR FOOD LOVERS

San Diego has been ranked fifth in Yelp’s list of the “Top U.S. Destination for Food Lovers.” According to Yelp, the ranking was determined by comparing cities’ new restaurants, ratings, and reviews as well as cuisine diversity and the percentage of food photos.

Some of the dishes to note — according to Yelp — included  Pork Belly Benedict at Werewolf in downtown San Diego, the Kimchi Dumpling Hot Soup at TastyPot in Kearny Mesa, and the Hot Chicken at Common Stock in Hillcrest.

San Francisco took the number one spot, followed by St. Louis and Honolulu.
