Comic-Con – a staple event of San Diego and one of the biggest pop culture trade shows in the world – is currently underway and as expected there is an overwhelming amount of activity going on. Amidst the energetic atmosphere in the San Diego Convention Center is comic book publisher, IDW Publishing, which is based at Liberty Station. IDW started out in 1999 as an award-winning publisher of comic books, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks. Now, it has expanded into other medium, taking the forms of IDW Games, IDW Entertainment, Top Shelf Productions, and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery. IDW has been involved in a multitude of big, familiar names in entertainment – Hasbro’s Transformers, G.I. Joe, My Little Pony, and Jem and the Holograms, “Star Trek,” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Toho’s Godzilla, “The X-Files,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Orphan Black” make up just the short list. At Comic-Con, IDW Publishing has an enormous lineup of panels and signings. Booth No. 2743 is the place to be with appearances by Ivan Reitman, Berkeley Breathed, Kevin Eastman, Bob Gale, Walter Simonson, the cast of “Wynonna Earp,” and many more, including some surprise guests. Make sure to stay tuned because there will also be some major announcements during the panels. To IDW Publishing and their creators, Comic-Con is special. Not just because it is the largest annual comic event of the year, but because it takes place on their home turf. Everyday, new content is released but IDW and creators do not really know how it affects their audience. Every year, they are excited about the opportunity to interact with fans; Comic-Con allows IDW, creators, and readers to take a look into each other’s’ worlds. IDW Publishing is thankful that the contract between San Diego and Comic-Con International has been extended to 2021 and hopes that the two parties will be able to maintain a working relationship in the future. If it turns out that Comic-Con were to move to another city, no matter where it would be, IDW Publishing will follow.
