Pacific Beach Middle
On Saturday, May 5, students from PBMS participated in the second annual San Diego Unified middle school track meet. More than 250 athletes from nine schools showed up at La Jolla High to compete in individual track events, relays, and field events including shot put, long jump, and high jump. After over two months of weekly practice, the students brought their best game and took home a variety of medals. The team was coached by Beau Doom, Ashley Henson, and Andre Evans.

Barnard Elementary – Teachers Sophia Dalton and Sara Hopkins spent quality time with six lucky Barnard students during their after school “teacher feature.” The teachers at Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School auctioned themselves off at an annual spring auction in April in order to raise money for the school. Eighteen teachers and Principal Aida Hernandez created fun and meaningful outings beyond the classroom that catered to their students’ interests. Known to Barnard families as “teacher features,” the list of activities included a showing of the latest Star Wars movie, ice skating lessons, rock climbing, arts and craft activities, and bowling with the principal. Fifth grade teachers Hopkins and Dalton partnered on their teacher feature to take six students to the San Diego Humane Society. The students and their teachers interacted directly with animals, including a dog, guinea pig, turtle, and more. “Our teacher feature program exemplifies the strength of the Barnard community,” said Hopkins. “When parents, students, and faculty come together, it can be a very meaningful and positive experience. Plus, spending time together outside of school is a great opportunity for students to see that teachers are real people, too!” This year’s teacher feature program raised $5,000 for the school, while the auction itself raised more than $30,000 overall. Proceeds from the event will support supplemental programs for students, including science, art, athletics, Mandarin language resources, campus beautification, and more. Kate Sessions Elementary – Kate Sessions Elementary School was recognized this year as a California Distinguished School for 2017-2018. Principal Adam Carlin explained: “this is a true honor and a reflection of our learning communities diligent efforts to provide the absolute best for each and every Sessions Seahawk. As a staff we feel extremely fortunate for the opportunity to support all our students as they prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow. Thank you to our amazing parent community for providing us the supports required to continue growing and taking risks each year.”
– The Bike Rodeo and Walk and Roll to School Day was a great success with the bike cage overflowing with scooters and bikes.
