
The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA) extended its annual “thank you” last week to outstanding businesses and community members who made significant achievements in 2010. The recognition came during the yearly OBMA awards celebration Oct. 28. The Promotion Committee, represented by committee chairwoman Cordelia Mendoza, honored the following: • Hodad’s: CNN Award for national recognition on the network; • “Terriers:” The original FX Network series was honored with the Community Partner Award for spotlighting on Ocean Beach and cooperative filming efforts with local businesses; • Dreamgirls Clothing Co.: Received the Business Award for its many years in business in downtown Ocean Beach; • Shannon Brown, Brown Marketing: Community Volunteer Award for her work with the new OB Restaurant & Entertainment Group (OBREG); • Dave Martin and Kevin Alsobrook, OBREG: Best New Marketing Promotion Award for efforts in getting OBREG established. The OBMA Design Committee, represented by committee chairwoman Barbara Iacometti, honored the following: • Young At Art Children’s Creative Center: Beautification Award for its work on the corner of Newport Avenue and Cable Street; • Pizza Port: Best Remodel Award for its interior and exterior remodel of an old building; • Ciao Bella: Best Themed Remodel Award for its interior remodel; • Margarita’s: Interior Remodel Award for its interior revitalization; • Zed Electric: Community Volunteer Award for its work on the OB community murals. The OBMA Economic Restructuring Committee awards were presented by committee chairwoman Heather Clarke. Those included: • Pizza Port was awarded again with the Positive Economic Impact Business Award; • Community Player awards went to Masonic Center, Starbucks, Torrey Pines Management, Seth’s Chop Shop and US Bank for various contributions to the Ocean Beach community. The Clean OB Committee, represented by chairman David Smedley, honored Greg Hankins for his community work. The Crime Prevention Committee, meanwhile, recognized: • the San Diego Police Department’s Western Division; • city of San Diego’s Park and Recreation Department; • Sunset Cliffs Surfing Association. OBMA President Mike Akey recognized Union Bank and the Ocean Beach Town Council as Outstanding Community Partners. Special awards were presented to OBMA board members Clarke, Mendoza and Iacometti for their exceptional leadership. OBMA members bid farewell to Clarke, manager of the Ocean Beach branch of Union Bank. Clarke had dedicated many hours outside her bank manager duties to the OBMA and the community of Ocean Beach. She was recently promoted to manage the Golden Triangle branch. Mendoza, co-owner of Cottage Antiques, has dedicated many hours chairing the OBMA Promotion Committee. OBMA members thanked her for her efforts and commitment to innovative marketing and promotion ideas for the OB business community. Iacometti, co-owner of Details SalonSpa, chairs the OBMA Design Committee, along with the Ocean Beach Street Fair Committee.
