Modern Nutrition: Superfoods

By Dr. Manny Kumar B.Sc., M.Sc., D.C. ?Structural Chiropractor at Modern Chiropractic

Recently, I have been hearing “how do I get out of pain?” and “how do I stay healthy?” commonly coming from our prospective/current practice members.  As a structural chiropractor, my job is to locate the issue, assess how long it has been there and then give my clinical advice on how to correct it.  Our office uses a “modern” chiropractic program that addresses nutritional requirements at certain clinical reference points.  The natural healing process designed by the body requires proper nutrients from day one.

Today, the diets we consume aren’t nutrient-dense and are deficient in what is needed to fulfill certain functional processes at a cellular level.  What we put into our bodies has to be nutrient-dense.  For the final quarter of 2014, I have challenged my practice members to incorporate these simple “superfoods” into their diet and I also challenge you to make these small changes as well.  Listed below are just some simple and accessible nutrient-dense “superfoods” that can increase the optimal function and overall health for you and your loved ones.

Turmeric
This anti-inflammatory spice has been used in my household for years because of its flavor and nutritional benefits.  The golden color of turmeric is derived from curcumin, which has shown to help prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, decrease pain and increase overall blood circulation (protects against blood clotting).  Using this spice in moderation everyday can increase our quality of life.

Spirulina
This blue-green fresh water algae is high in chlorophyll and is a great team player in helping to remove toxins from your blood.  It also boosts your overall immune system function.  During this time of the year, it’s vital to facilitate our overall function and immune system as we get ready to welcome in 2015.

Kale
Kale is a great anti-oxidant and has shown to help with blood clotting.  When purchasing kale, be sure to buy organic and support local farmers.  I personally use this “superfood” in my smoothies because it contains vitamins A, C, and K and helps me get through the day.

Moringa Leaf
This nutrient-dense “superfood” hits a home run in my books.  It has been called the “miracle” leaf because of its capability to house essential amino acids and anti-oxidants.  Our environment is changing day-to-day and we must protect ourselves to the toxins that we are exposed to on a day-to-day basis.

Mint
Mint is packed with a lot of benefits shown to increase our overall energy output along with helping depression.  Mint also makes a great addition to water for those that need to change the taste.  Growing up in an East Indian household, this herb was accessible to me every day and was used to create chutney for our homemade dishes.

Chia Seed
Chia seeds have recently become a hot topic and are now displayed in every grocery store due to their nutrient content.  This “superfood” has omega fatty acids; they are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.  Chia seeds are a must have staple in your diet.  High-level athletes have been utilizing this “superfood” in their recovery drinks for years and have seen a huge change in their overall performance and day-to-day recovery.

Taking the correct steps on a daily basis and understanding your body is the key to prevention and living a healthy lifestyle.  Each day, you are making choices that affect your greatest asset, your overall ability to adapt to your environment.  These “superfoods” should be taken in moderation and for those that have specific dietary restrictions; a consult with your primary health care provider is needed before any changes are made.
