San Diego Gas & Electric confirms that at 3:25 a.m. Friday, nearly all of the households and businesses that went without power due to the blackout Thursday had their electricity restored. San Diego County lost power just after 3:30 p.m. Thursday, and while power restoration came in waves through the night, it was fully restored by Friday morning.
Initially determining that 1.4 million people were without power, it was later estimated that over 2 million people had no electricity.
Early reports indicate the outage was triggered after a 500-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage line from Arizona to California tripped out of service. Other reports suggest the outage occurred from human error by a maintenance worker in Yuma, Ariz.
The FBI reported they had ruled out terrorist activity early on.
The perimeter of the outage spans from Yuma, Ariz., below the Mexico border to Tijuana and Mexicali, through San Diego and as far north as Orange County.
SDG&E is asking customer to conserve their electricity by monitoring their use of home air conditioners.
