‘Annex District’ featured on tour: neighborhood bordering Mission Hills could become part of historic district
Built by master builder Nathan Rigdon, this Prairie Style residence is one of several homes with historic designation that will be featured on a guided walking tour of the Mission Hills “Annex District” on Sept. 25.
A guided walking tour of the Mission Hills “Annex District” on Saturday, Sept. 25, will uncover a century of little-known neighborhood facts, said Deborah Quillin, chairwoman of the annual Mission Hills Heritage event.

Located between Hickory Street and Sunset Boulevard from Witherby Street to St. James Place, the 99-home neighborhood is under consideration for annexation to the existing Mission Hills historic district.

Ten homes in the area previously have been awarded individual historic designations. Special features of each of these homes will be highlighted during the Sept. 25 tour.

“The guides will discuss the diverse architectural styles, some of the people who lived in the homes and the neighborhood’s history from its beginnings in 1910,” Quillin said. “There is so much detail that has been uncovered during the research (for district annexation) that adds a whole new perspective to the development of the neighborhood we live in today. It will be great fun to share.”

For example, past and present facts surrounding a Mission Hills mansion on Sunset Boulevard will be revealed. Encompassing nearly an entire block, the Edith Williams House was built in 1915, became home to Balboa Park’s Museum of Art collection during World War II and was demolished in the 1950’s. Photographs of the mansion and grounds will be onsite and guides will point out the original front steps that have been incorporated into one of the three homes now occupying the property.

Tours will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets will be sold the day of the tour beginning at 12:30 p.m. at 4203 Arguello Street and are $10 for MHH members and $15 for non-members. At the end of the tour, refreshments will be served at an Arguello Street garden.

Mission Hills Heritage is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization established to protect and preserve the character and charm of the historic Mission Hills community. For more information, go to missionhillsheritage.org.
