Free Concert Series

Sunday, Feb. 19

The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation presents at least two free concerts each month. All concerts begin at 3 p.m. and are performed in the Visitor Center Theater, 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail. Donations for the musicians are appreciated.

‘Sounds of Ascension’

Sunday, March 12

The Patrick Henry High School (PHHS) Choirs will present a concert at 4 p.m. in Ascension Lutheran Church, 5106 Zion Ave. This is part of the “Sounds of Ascension” series which offers free musical events for the community.

The choirs will present a variety of music including choral classics, Broadway tunes and international music. There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be taken to assist the PHHS choirs in raising funds for their program. A reception will follow the concert.

‘Amended Reality’

Through Friday, March 3

The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation presents “Amended Reality,” an exhibit featuring works by artist Gail Ackley, in the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center Art Gallery, 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail.

Ackley is interested in local shore birds. Her paintings also present elements of landscapes, as well as pieces drawn from family photos that communicate universal themes about relationships. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

African-American Read-In

Tuesday, Feb. 21

Community College Poetry Competition

Thursday, Feb. 23

The Umoja Program will host the first poetry competition of Region 10 community colleges, including City, Southwestern, Mesa and MiraCosta colleges, as part of Black History Month events at Grossmont College.

‘The Birth of a Nation’

Monday, Feb. 27

The Cuyamaca College Black Student Union will host a viewing of “The Birth of a Nation,” based on the story of Nat Turner, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831.

The screening is part of the college’s program for Black History Month, and will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Digital Theater in B-101 on the campus at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego. Free and open to the public. Visit bit.ly/2lMcOKq.

‘Traces of the Trade’ screening and speaker

Monday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, Feb. 28

A two-part program will conclude Grossmont College’s celebration of Black History Month with a screening of “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep South” on Feb. 27 and guest speaker Tom DeWolf, author of “Gather at the Table: The Healing Journey of a Daughter of Slavery and a Son of the Slave Trade,” on Feb. 28.

In “Traces of the Trade,” filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins, including DeWolf, retrace the transatlantic slave trade. The Feb. 27 screening will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in Room 220, Building 26.

DeWolf will speak from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Griffin Gate, Building 60. Both events will be held on the college campus, 8800 Grossmont College Drive. Visit bit.ly/2kl364B.
