Helix Highlights – April 24, 2015

By Jennifer Osborn

As of this writing, the Helix Junior Varsity Baseball team is undefeated with a 15-0 record. The team is working hard and playing well. Good things are in store for this group of young men.

The Helix drum line competed against 83 other units in the American Drum Line Association Championships and, for the fourth year in a row, came out the state champions in their division. This is the first time in the association’s 30-year history that any school has achieved this feat.

First-year choir director Michelle Tolvo-Chan has revived Helix’s Show Choir program. The groups recently competed in their first competition in almost two decades, where they took third place.

The Helix Speech & Debate team competed at the California High School Speech Association State Championships. About 330 schools in the state competed to qualify to the tournament — 160 schools qualified at least one student, and after three days of competition, Helix finished 14th overall.

The following students advanced to semifinals or finals in their events: Spencer McCall (fourth place, Student Congress); Mikayla Gomez & Alysia Baumann (seventh place, Duo Interpretation); Sylvia Montijo (seventh place, Thematic Interpretation); Aaron Knuteson (15th place, Oratorical Interpretation)

We invite the community to participate in Helix’s 2015 Senior Boards. All Helix seniors must complete a senior project, which entails creating a product, coordinating an event, planning a performance or providing an actual service that has been designed by them. The final phase of the senior project is “Senior Boards,” which provide an opportunity for our students to shine and to feel a sense of accomplishment as they demonstrate their knowledge and skills to their community.

Senior Boards will take place on Tuesday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Community members are welcome to participate in either or both dates. Please contact me at [email protected] to confirm your participation.

The senior project is just one example of Helix’s ongoing efforts to provide graduates with the tools necessary to succeed in their future endeavors, whether it is college, full-time employment, trade school or the military.

We are always interested in letting our community know about Helix. The Excellence in Education Tour is offered twice a month, and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. It is a one-hour tour and program that highlights our vision, history, accomplishments, goals and needs. This month’s tours will take place on Tuesday, May 5, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.; and Thursday, May 21, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit helixcharter.net. We hope to see you there!
