The 71st annual Ocean Beach Kite Festival, billed as the oldest kite festival for children in the United States, will be Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Robb Field.
The free family event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach, with generous support from the California Credit Union and the Ocean Beach Woman’s Club. The festival has been a mainstay for OBceans who are teaching children how to make and fly a simple kite, with all materials provided free, and prizes given for the best-decorated kites. The multi-generational event now includes people who took part in it as children, and are now bringing their children and grandchildren.
The event includes spectacular demonstrations by professional kite fliers, with kite making ending at 3 p.m.
Music will be provided by OB’s own Beer Feat band, and prizes are supplied by Lighthouse Ice Cream. Food, games, and a craft fair are also part of the festivities.
