Boys to Men Mentoring marks the closing of its 13th annual 100 Wave Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 12 with an event led by ambassadors Damien Hobgood, Bird Huffman, Shawn Styles, Joe, Roper, and Ernie Hahn who will take surfers in a group paddle out to catch their last 10 waves from 7-10 a.m. just south of Belmont Park in Mission Beach.

The Save 10 Waves event is the final celebration of 2022 bringing all the teams that participated in the 15 events hosted over the last two months as part of the 100 Wave Challenge.

“There are so many young men that are looking for the respect and admiration of older guys,” said Hobgood. “Boys to Men sends in teams of mentors to schools around the county on a weekly basis to fill that gap and give young men the positive reinforcement they need to be the good men they want to be. I love everything about what this program does and stands for.”

Besides catching their final 10 waves, the event will have boys and parents who are part of Boys to Men mentoring share personal stories of how their lives have been positively impacted since taking part.

“The 100 Wave Challenge is pure help and pure love,” said Huffman. “When everyone is out there catching waves for the organization there is no better example of surfing for a good cause than that.”

Carve for the Cause was the theme of this year’s 100 Wave Challenge, which saw surfers from Oceanside to Imperial Beach organize team paddle outs during the two-month wave window that started on Sept. 17. Surfers were encouraged to build teams of between two and 10 surfers in order to create a 100 Wave experience inspiring them to raise funds, train, and catch waves together.

Surf teams could select a beach to catch their 100 waves and a date to paddle out with those who set a goal to raise $5,000 or more being treated to a day-at-the-beach experience, featuring coffee and pastries provided by Pannikin Coffee along with tea, beach towels, and long-sleeved T-shirts, donated by Salty Crew, as well as surfboard wax bars and combs, which included a lunch prepared by Board and Brew.

The surfers taking part on Saturday will also be treated to a breakfast and lunch, provided by Miguel’s Mexican Cocina, with live music by Steve Antti and Gary Santo Pietro.
